As part of a wider initiative, we are proud to join with Toyota Canada in the Evergreen Learning Grounds Program.

In its commitment to the environment and environmental education, Toyota Canada (TCI) has joined forces with the Evergreen Learning Grounds Program to transform Canadian school grounds into natural learning environments.

Through 2003, A $1.8 million sponsorship from TCI will allow Evergreen to provide the tools and support that students, teachers and communities need in order to turn often barren school properties into inviting play spaces and natural learning environments. Toyota's donation will make it possible for Evergreen to provide groups that wish to naturalize their school grounds with:

  • Resource tool kits, including "All Hands in the Dirt," a comprehensive guidebook to designing and creating natural school grounds.
  • The chance to apply for a seed grant that will assist in the purchase of native plants.
  • Access to important organizational support and advice from Evergreen.

In addition, the Toyota Evergreen Learning Grounds Program has launched a National School Challenge, offering children the chance to share a vision of the ideal school yard - or show how theirs could use help — using drawings, paintings, photographs, maps and essays.

Over 1000 schools across Canada have started naturalization projects, planting native trees, shrubs and wildflowers, planning meadows or ponds, and creating murals, sculptures, vegetable gardens and other theme areas - transforming the traditional asphalt school ground into dynamic outdoor classrooms.

Toyota's "Leaf Car" Logo
symbolizes the company-wide drive
toward environmental awareness.

Toyota is proud of its environmental accomplishments, both in North America and around the world.

The company's efforts to reduce the environmental impact of motor vehicles include facilities certified to ISO 14001 and 9000 standards, recycling scrap and waste during manufacturing, and the use of recycled materials and reusable packaging that can be sent back to suppliers for refilling. These efforts all lead to motor vehicles that showcase cutting-edge propulsion technology such as battery-powered electrics, gasoline-electric hybrids and ultimately fuel cell-powered vehicles.

As one of the largest automakers in the world, Toyota feels a responsibility to the environment that extends beyond the immediate areas in which we do business. "We must develop ways for the automobile to lessen the impact it leaves behind," said Yoshi Ishizaka, Senior Managing Director of Toyota Motor Corporation. "It is our actions today that determine the world of tomorrow. The result of those actions will directly affect the world that our children will inherit."

To symbolize this commitment, Toyota has developed the leaf car logo. It stands for the entire spectrum of the company's achievements and goals. To quote Toyota Motor Corporation's Guiding Principles, "(We must) Dedicate ourselves to providing clean and safe products and to enhancing the quality of life everywhere through all our activities."
